Francis J. Kane Named President Of the International Copper Association, Ltd.

New York, NY (June 21, 2002) - Francis J. Kane has been named President of the International Copper Association, Ltd. (ICA). Kane replaces Jan Smolders, who served in this position since 1996.

"We are delighted to have someone of Frank's caliber on board to lead ICA," said ICA Chairman Juan VillarzĂș. "His extensive metals industry and management experience will prove invaluable as ICA continues with its efforts to accelerate the growth in the use of copper worldwide."

Previously Kane worked as a Senior Vice President of Cyprus Climax Metals Company and served as Treasurer and Vice President of Investor/Public Relations of Cyprus Amax Minerals Company. Earlier he served in management capacities at Bear, Stearns & Co., United Technologies Corporation, Union Carbide Corporation and Arthur D. Little, Inc. Kane also served as chairman of the Mineral Information Institute, a national non-profit organization dedicated to educating youth about the science of minerals and other natural resources. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in geologic sciences from Harvard University and an MBA from Harvard's Graduate School of Business Administration.

ICA increases awareness and usage of copper by communicating the unique attributes that make this sustainable element an essential contributor to the formation of life, to advances in science and technology, and to a higher standard of living throughout the world. The Association's 35 members represent about 80 percent of the world's refined copper output and are among the largest copper producers, fabricators and wire and cable companies.
