 Despite
a slightly higher first cost, upsizing copper cabling saves
you money.
You already know why - I2R, the law of physics that says all
electrical conductors waste energy in the form of heat. Wasted
energy is wasted money. And that's a powerful story for management.
For example, upsizing to 4/0 cable from 3/0 saves 3,200 kWh
per year when feeding 117A over 500 feet to a 125 hp, 460V three-phase
motor operating at 75% of full load with a duty cycle of 8,000
hours per year. Depending on local energy rates, the $300 difference
between 3/0 and 4/0 cable could be paid back in less than one
year.
Plus, that 500 feet of 4/0 cable will continue to generate significant
energy and dollar savings year after year. Upsized cable has
other benefits, too. It provides for tomorrow's expansion needs.
It runs cooler and, therefore, safer. And, double- or triple-sized
neutrals defend against non-linear harmonic loads created by
computers and variable speed motor drives.
There's a lot to be said in favor of upsizing copper cabling.
