The uniquely beneficial properties of copper are extensively used
in the shipbuilding industry. Due to its excellent resistance to corrosion
and biofouling in salt water and saline atmospheres, copper, copper
alloys, and copper-based antifouling paints protect boats, ships,
offshore oil platforms, desalination piping, pumps, valves, naval
vessel components, boat propellers, shafts and rudders, yacht fittings,
and fish farming cages.
Offshore oil and gas equipment made with copper alloys include pumps,
splash zone and sub sea bolts, drill collars, piping systems, valves,
deluge system sprinklers, and anti-fouling collars. Copper nickel
alloys, installed in vessel hulls, are resistant to corrosion and
therefore eliminate the need for costly dry docking.
Many utilities use copper alloy screens in water intake systems to
reject the attachment of zebra mussels and impede their growth. The
copper alloys help to prevent the clogging of the water intakes by
these mussels. |
